Ilex crenata ‘Compacta’ one of the Japanese Hollies is often used in mass groups as a low shrub low hedge or as a tall groundcover. The compact habit of growth slow growth rate and small leaves make these ideal plants for use as clipped or formal hedges. Adjacent plants often grow together looking like a group of green mounds. Eventually they grow together forming a sea of green. Little pruning is necessary to produce or maintain the globular form. In spring the young stems are purple and mature foliage holds its glossy green color all year.
