Moderate-growing evergreen shrub or low-branching tree with a rounded growth-habit, typically growing to 15-25’ tall x 10-20’ wide, or greater with age. This durable subspecies features glossy, 2-4” long ovate leaves that emerge bright-green and mature to an attractive deep-green. Frilly, lightly-fragrant, butterfly-attracting creamy-white flower clusters appear in late-spring, followed by numerous deep-red berries that mature to blackish-red in summer, and are a favorite for birds. While capable of withstanding drought conditions once established, regular watering for the first couple of seasons will help promote a more vigorous growing specimen. Tolerates heat or coastal conditions, and is well-suited as a large screen, background, or slope planting. Prefers a well-drained soil in a full to partial sun exposure.
